Food Grade Epoxy Flooring and Coatings

Food and Beverage Flooring

Being educated on the available flooring options for food and beverage plants is critical in deciding what floor coating is best for your particular type of business. The USDA has strict guidlines regarding flooring for professional food processing, manufacturing, and preparation facilities.

Thermal-Chem manufactures a full line of USDA-approved epoxy and urethane cement floor and wall coating systems specifically for food and beverage processing facilities. These 100% solids coating systems contain zero VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) and have virtually no odor while being applied. They also come in rapid cure versions to keep your wait time to a minimum.

Here’s what you need to know about food grade flooring guidelines and why our epoxy and urethane cement flooring fits the bill.

An Overview of USDA and FDA Approved Flooring

Both the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) outline strict rules and regulations for food processing establishments. These guidelines can be found in the USDA Sanitation Performance Standards Compliance Guide and the FDA Food Establishment Plan Review Guidelines, among other documents. Here is a brief summary of the rules.

Most of the information about food industry floors for the USDA can be found in Section 6-201 of the Sanitation Performance Standards Compliance Guide. It stipulates that “the floors, floor coverings, walls, wall coverings, and ceilings shall be designed, constructed, and installed so they are smooth and easily cleanable, except that anti slip floor coverings or applications may be used for safety reasons.”

In the “Floors” section of the FDA Food Establishment Plan Review Guidelines, stipulations require that “grouting should be non-absorbent and impregnated with epoxy, silicone, polyurethane or equivalent compound.”

These regulations can be reduced to two primary functions: sanitation and durability. Hygienic flooring that is easy to clean and sanitize helps ensure that food and beverage products will not be contaminated by bacteria, mold or mildew. That’s why seamless surfaces are vital. In addition to being seamless, they need to be tough and durable. Floor coatings need to have good thermal-shock, impact, chemical, and abrasion resistance to withstand the constant cleaning and heavy traffic found in food and beverage facilities.

Our Food Grade Epoxy Flooring  works great for:

  • Meat Processing

Meat plants require flooring that is easy to clean and sanitize while providing a safe walking surface for their employees.

  • Dairies

Cheese and dairy facilities are tough environments for flooring. The constant moisture, heavy impact, corrosion, and thermal shock found in these facilities require a tough floor coating system.

  • Breweries /Distilleries/Wineries

Long fermentation processes require products to sit over stretches of time, and unsanitary brewery conditions can affect multiple batches at once. They require functional and hygenic floor coatings.

  • Food Packagers

The constant heavy traffic and abrasion usually found in these environments require a tough, durable system to provide a seamless, sanitary surface that is easy to clean and maintain.

Commercial kitchen flooring, bakery flooring, and other food and beverage industry flooring must comply with the same standards as the industries above.

What is Food Grade Epoxy Flooring?

As you read above, the USDA and FDA require food and beverage facilities to have seamless, non-absorbent, easily cleanable and durable floor coverings. Both our epoxies and urethane cement (ThermalCrete) systems satisfy those requirements.

So what is urethane cement? Urethane Cements are also known as Cementitious Urethane, Polyurethane Concrete, and Cementitious Polyurethane. It’s chemical composition of water emulsified polyurethane combined with cement and silica sand produce properties that exceed those of concrete while delivering the ultimate resistance to thermal shock and the ability to withstand high temperatures.

Urethane cement is typically installed at a 1/4″ thickness. It bonds extremely well to the concrete beneath it. For food plants that use hot water washdowns and hot steam cleaning, urethane cement is the way to go.

Epoxy flooring, on the other hand, is an adhesive that consists of a polymer of epoxides. It is created between two different chemicals. It uses the chemical process of curing to bind a substance with a hardening mechanism, called a curing agent. Epoxy creates a strong and enduring floor, but one major advantage of using urethane cement instead of epoxy flooring is thermal shock resistance.

Some benefits of both epoxy and urethane cement coatings are:

  • Satisfy both USDA and FDA floor covering requirements.
  • Seamless – does not give mold, mildew or bacteria a place to grow
  • Tough and Durable
  • Easy to Clean and Maintain
  • Provide a safe walking surface
  • Zero VOC’s and no odor while being applied
  • Rapid Cure times for quick installations and reduced downtime
  • Excellent chemical resistance and able to withstand the cleaning agents typically used in food and beverage manufacturing.
  • Our Urethane Cement (Thermal-Crete) has better thermal-shock resistance which food plants typically need when they have cold floors being washed on a daily basis with hot water.

What is ThermalCrete?

ThermalCrete is our urethane cement system. It is a three component, polyurethane flooring system with water emulsified polyurethane, cement, and silica sand, built to withstand temperatures up to 230°F. It can be applied as a slurry broadcast system, or a trowel system with a topcoat. It is easy to clean, durable, sanitary, and slip-resistant.

Why Does Thermal Chem Choose Urethane Floor Coding?

We recommend our ThermalCrete urethane cement systems for food and beverage facilities (meat and poultry plants, dairy, breweries, wineries, Industrial and commercial kitchens, and any other type of food or beverage manufacturing facility) over our epoxies because they have better heat resistance and thermal shock capabilities.

ThermalCrete

ThermalCrete is our urethane cement system that provides the ultimate protection against “thermal-shock”.  ThermalCrete is designed specifically for use in meat processing, dairy, pharmaceutical, and food plants or anywhere that high impact, chemical exposure, and/or excessive temperature swings can be expected. These floor systems can be installed with an integral cove base, sloped to improve drainage, and are available in a variety of colors – to provide the ultimate safe and clean work environment. Urethane is known to last an incredibly long time-span and is also a heat resistant substance. It is also a popular choice for food and beverage plants due to their easily cleanable and durable surface. Benefits to this urethane cement flooring also include that it is slip resistant and acquires maximum sanitation.

TuffPatch FP

Be sure to check out our TuffPatch FP (Food Processing). It’s a floor repair kit designed specifically for the food and beverage industry.
